MONKEY ISLAND
RÍO AMAZONAS-IQUITOS-PERÚ

Part of the Amazon paradise is “The monkey Island” situated along Amazonas, the most superlative riverbecause it carries far more water than any other river in the world. The island has 250 hectares and it is 30 km. from Iquitos, the main city of the jungle, just following down river on the right. Gilberto Guerra Reátegui an honorable official tourist guide, has been developing the project devotedly for over ten years there.
He loves the incomparable flora and the fauna which are around the island, so he has specially decided to protect and preserve monkeys and other wild animals too.
He has become the first great green promoter to preserve the ecology and the Amazon environment on this area.
When people from “first zone Timicuro”, the placewhere “The Monkey Island” is located, have known about this project, they have given to Gilberto all the facilities to get the area.It was settledon August, 30 1997 through and official agreement between Inrena authorities, agricultural ministery and representative of the Timicuro community.

A hard cleaning working, reforesting and provisions had been done for the earliest five years. The most suitable trees for the area have been planting and some fruit trees so animals get food easily. In addition plants are adapted in firm soil.

This wonderful experience was TEN years ago and the reforesting has grown the first fruit. People who live there, are working in the crop so the island has become a source of food for those people and monkeys as well.

At present the monkey island is constituted as a civil association non profit
the proposes of the association are:

1.- conservation an environment regrowing wild flora and fauna.
2.- Natuaral resource research.
3.- Lively and scientific tourism.
4.- Making, runnign social economical productive evironmental project.
5.- Also, the associate goal is to make everything dealing with prservation and defense of the amazon
peruvian nature based on local people scientific research so you can do the following:
     a) promote ecological collective conscience with the belief of any nature oreservation activity and the Ç
proper use of natural resources will not be made without the local people participation because these
people are the logical optio to set natural protection regulations and comply them as well.
     b) Encourage the relationship between men and biodiversity.
     c) Sponsor the ecological conmunity.
     d) Join with the ecological world community.

we have benn going with the running and the settled plans...

PROVISION AND THE CARE ON THE ISLAND

It wasn’t easy to settle this project mainly because of the previous and current economical lacks, in spite of these, a variety of monkeys live free in good atmosphere between people who look after and feed them.
People that live and work in the island are ones who were born in the community so their job has become meaningful.

There are plenty of natural jungle effects that causes the Amazonas river like a flood so people that work in the area aren’t enough and everything turns into disadvantages to run with the project.

HELP US TO PROTECT THEM

As you see, a jungle cottage in included in this project that in used to live with my sister Martha and the family that is responsible to clean the area, plant the crops and look the monkeys.
There are plenty of natural jungle effects that causes the Amazonas river like a flood so people that work in the area aren’t enough and everything turns into disadvantages to run with the project.
All mention above makes us difficult to get engaged a person or institution to look after these precious creatures, the monkeys, considered as the sanctuary of the great biodiversity of the Amazon.

Help us keeping monkeys in good conditions with amount of money if so, we will run with your project and ours.
